Costco Wholesale plans expansion in Washington area

Richard Smith Published 23 January 2012

Costco Wholesale, a US-based warehouse club chain, is expanding in the Washington area with plans to open a new store on a 12-acre tract in Alexandria, one of three locations in the works in the region.

Costco's expansion might seem minor compared to retail giant Walmart's dozen new stores opening in the area, according to Washington Post.

In December 2011, the discount retailer struck a deal to open its first location in the district at the Shops at Dakota Crossing, a 42-acre retail destination in Northeast. The shop is expected to open in August.

Costco has also plans to open a new location at the Westfield Wheaton mall in Montgomery County. The store is slated to open in the latter half of 2012.

The Alexandria shop is likely to open in spring 2013. The new additions will bring Costco's total stores count in greater Washington to 19, up from 16.
